Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Two days running on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), and no problems seen so far. Speed seems similar, stability seems similar, IE does in fact block pop-up ads (however, Firefox is still my browser of choice), and the firewall blocked an adware program on my father's computer. So far, a success for Microsoft in the realm of security on the desktop.
Now, what about the legacy issue? All the people in my life who seem to have computer issues are on Windows 98, so the service pack will not help them. Is it too much to ask for that all the foreseeable features and security should be in the first version of the product?
With SP2, Microsoft may be pushing the security levels available in modern Unix-based and Apple's OS-X operating systems
